Mother-in-law convicted in dowry harassment case

Mangalore, Jan 25,2013: A woman hailing from Marnamikatta in Mangalore has been sentenced to four and a half years of imprisonment in a dowry harassment case.


The woman Shakeela Dastagir (52) is also liable to pay a penalty of Rs 1.15 lakh as per the court orders. The ruling comes in the wake of a petition filed by Shakeela’s daughter in-law Yasmin alleging that her mother-in-law , husband and other family members  had tortured her for dowry.


Yasmin was given in marriage to Sirajuddin Sayyed in 2003.Gold weighing 50 sovereigns was given at the time of marriage though the groom’s family had demanded a cash of RS 3 lakh and 100 sovereigns of gold.


Yasmin in her complaint had alleged that her husband and in-laws were harassing and torturing her to get the remaining dowry amount and gold.
