Mangalore, Jan 31,2013 : Mohan Menon, ADRM of Palghat Division has said that the Railway Board has plans to convert Mangalore railway station as a world class station.
Addressing a meeting held at the DC office in Mangalore on January 31, Thursday to discuss railway issues, the officer said the Department plans to upgrade several stations across the country into world class stations and that Mangalore was definitely one among them. Under the Palghat division, Mangalore and Calicut stations have been earmarked for the purpose, he said and added that a Belgian consultancy has been entrusted with the responsibility of identifying the stations based on issues like seamless connectivity.
Railway authorities participating in the meeting, while responding to a plea made by the Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on the proposal of having a under pass at Bajal-Padil, said the tender will be floated within three weeks.
Deputy Speaker and MLA Yogish Bhat who too was present, put forth a proposal to have a fly over at Pandeshwar railway crossing considering the disruption in traffic on the route. On this occasion, Bhat also stated that the state government had approved the construction of a Railway Under Bridge on Padil-Bajal road at a cost of Rs 5.16 crore.
He said if the state government would spend Rs 2.28 crores, the Railway Ministry would sanction Rs 2.87 crore for the purpose..
