Mangalore, March 19, 2013: There is a greater need to fight against the naturalization of sub-ordination of women in the society,” said Dr Rita Noronha, Professor and social activist.

Speaking at a one-day workshop on ‘Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Technique (Sex Determination) Act’ organized under the joint aegis of the  DK Zilla Panchayat,  Department of Health and Family Welfare and Public Welfare Department at the Regional Advanced Paediatric Care Centre at Wenlock Hospital.

Continuing, she  said  it was  owing to this that discrimination against women was on the rise in the society. Male preference is  deep rooted in the society and this is the reason for the rise in crime against women, Prof. Noronha added.

Dr Rukmini M, DK  District Reproductive and Child Health Officer said medical practitioners many a time are ignorant of the amendments of the PC and PNDT Act (1994), which were implemented in 2012. Under the Amendment rules 2012, each medical practitioner qualified under the Act to conduct ultrasonography is permitted to be registered with only two genetic clinics or ultrasound centres in a single district.

The workshop was earlier inaugurated by Dr P Saroja, DK District Surgeon and Medical Superintendent of Wenlock Hospital.
