Puttur, June 25, 2013 : Veteran Yakshagana artiste Sheenappa Bhandary passed away on June 24, Monday following a brief illness. He was 88 and has left behind his wife, five sons, two daughters and innumerous admirers.
Bhandary who was a school drop out after 5th standard, learnt Yakshagana and later worked for Kadri, Koodlu and Dharmasthala Yakshagana troupes.
He even was a part of Subrahmanya Mela and played a key role in popularizing Yakshagana among the masses. His portrayal of mythological characters like Hiranyakashipu, Kaurava and Kamsa was widely appreciated.
He was the recipient of several awards including state level award in recognition of his contributions to the art. One of his sons Sridhar Bhandari has followed his father’s footsteps and is a well-known Yakshagana artiste.
