Umashree promises to ensure inclusion of Tulu in 8th Schedule of Constitution

Bangalore, Aug 1, 2013 : State Minister for Kannada and Culture Umashree has  said that the state government was taking all necessary steps to ensure that the Centre which is planning to add ten more languages to the  Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, included even Tulu in the list.

In a written reply to a query from Mangalore North MLA Mohideen Bava  seeking  fulfillment of the longstanding demand of people of  Tulunad,  the minister said the state government would soon be furnishing all necessary information sought by the Centre on Tulu speaking people in the state. She said steps are being taken to gather information regarding Tulu speaking people as per the 2011 census.

Presently, the government has data regarding Tulu speaking people as per the 2001 census, she informed. The Karnataka Government had placed forth the demand to include Tulu in the Eighth Schedule of the constitution as early as 2001, she further stated.
