Police foil robbery bid, arrest three fleeing with gold

Udupi, Sep 19, 2013:The district police foiled a robbery attempt in Karkal on Tuesday night by arresting three of the six accused.

According to police, two youths approached Ramachandra Mane, a jeweller on Mahalakshmi Street while he was closing his shop under the pretext of enquiring about some order.

The two then threw chilly powder into the jeweller’s eyes and snatched from him a bag containing gold ornaments worth Rs. 40 lakh and cash totalling 40,000 and fled the scene with the help of four other youths waiting in a car towards Karkal main road.

Mr. Mane immediately alerted the police, who conducted a ‘nakabandi’. When police were checking a car near Hiriyadka, six people got out of the car and started running away.

The police gave a chase and managed to catch two. Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah said on Wednesday said the police later managed arrest the third accused. The arrested have been identified as Madhukar Acharya (26) from Muniyal, Chandra Acharya (35) and Shahid from Kundapur

“While we have recovered all the gold ornaments weighing about 1.5 kg, we are yet to recover the cash. We are trying to trace the remaining three accused, who are absconding,” Mr. Boralingaiah said.

Mr. Boralingaiah gave the names of the absconders as Sandeep, Prashanth, and Mohan.

A case had been registered at the Karkal Town Police Station and investigations were on.
