Central team visits Udupi to assess rain damage

 Udupi, Sep 25, 2013 : A team of officers from the Union Government on Monday visited the areas affected badly by the recent rains in Udupi district.

The team was headed by the Joint Secretary in the Union Home Ministry R.K. Srivastav. It included members such as Sanjay Garg, officer in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and Muralidharan, senior research officer of Union Planning Commission.

The team first visited the areas worst affected by sea erosion in the district. It inspected the damaged caused by sea erosion to the road, houses and other properties in Tenka Yermal village. It also visited other areas affected by sea erosion.

Later the team visited Anjar village and inspected the damage done to the arecanut plantations by “Kole Roga”.

In Kundapur taluk, the team visited Albady village and inspected the houses and rubber plantations damaged due to heavy rains.

M.T. Reju, Deputy Commissioner, briefed the Central team on the damage done by heavy rains in the district. He informed the team that as many as six persons had lost their lives due to the heavy rains and a compensation of Rs. 9 lakh had been given to their kin.

As many as 418 houses had been damaged due to the rains.

The damage to these 418 houses had been estimated at Rs. 1.72 crore. 933 kilometres of roads and 46 bridges in the district had been damaged due to rains. The total loss due to rains in the district had been estimated at Rs. 56.8 crore, Mr. Reju said.

S.A. Prabhakar Sharma, the Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat, and Kumara, Additional Deputy Commissioner, were present.
