Mangalore, Dec 2, 2013: Sharan Rao edged over his nearest rival Andria D’souza with a better tiebreak point to bag the title in Karavali Champions Trophy 2013 a two day inter district open rapid Chess Tournament organised by coastalfame.com in association with Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan held at Auditorium, SDM Law College, Mangalore. After final 8 rounds, both were tied with 7 points. Andria had to be contended with runner up place. Her college mate Shalon Pais won the 3rd place with 6 points.

Top ten players in open and the top 3 age group winners in 6 categories from the junior group were awarded prizes. U T Khader, State Minister for Health, J R Lobo, MLA, Prof. Manjunath Shetty of Fr. Mullers Institute of Medical Education, Gulzar Bhanu, Former Mayor, Prasanna Rao, Joint Secretary, Chess Association of India, Dennis D’silva distributed prizes to the winners.  On the occasion, South Zone inter University Chess Board prize winner Nihal Manjunath and National School Games Medal winner Yogitha Mohan Naik were honored for their performance.

Keerti Naik compered,Yashas Salian welcomed the gathering,Chaitra Bhat sang the prayer and Convener Mohammed Irfan delivered vote of thanks.

220 players from D.K, Udupi, Chikkamagalur and Kasargod including many FIDE rated players have participated in this swiss league format Rapid event.

The event was earlier inaugurated by Sri Suresh Ballal, Member, KPCC by symbolic moves. Sri Vasudeva M R, Honorary President, UKCA; Sri Deric Pinto, Administrator, Derik’s Chess School; Mohd. Shaiq Ajmeer of Ajmeer Constructions were also present on the dais.
