Nitte Varsity likely to set up community radio

Mangalore, March 18, 2014: The Nitte University is mulling to set up a community radio service to dove tail with its health and educational services, said Vice Chancellor Dr Ramananda  shetty.


Speaking at the inauguration of ’Beacons2014’, an inter collegiate festival of the department of mass communication and journalism of Nitte University, he said the contours of the radio service will be worked out buy the university’s department of mass communication and journalism.


Akshavani Executive Director Dr Vasanth Kumar Perla spoke on the merits of setting up community radio and the new role of public service broadcasting in democratising and decentralizing radio across the country. Vasanth Kumar Perla said he was hopeful that Nitte University will help in furthering the cause of community radio as an instrument of Panchayati Raj.


The festival ended with much fanfare after a day of gruelling contests in the competitive and noon-competitive categories.


More than 75 shortlisted candidates from the colleges across Karnataka and Kerala participated in the inaugural event.


The competitive categories witnessed see-saw battles in which St Aloysius degree college triumphed over Alva’s college, Moodabidri  to lift the glittering ‘Beacons2014’championship trophy.
