Aged ailing woman rescued in Karkala

Mangalore, July 05, 2014:  Sunanda Nayak, in her 80s an ailing woman, who was engaged in daily wage works until recently, was abandoned by her children here at Ajekaru in Karkala. She was rescued by the National Federation of Human Rights Council, in a pathetic condition and admitted to the Ajjarkadu District government hospital at here on July 4, .

It is said, Sunanda Nayak was abandoned by her three children. All the three children are staying separately and not taking care of her. She has two daughters who stay nearby and a son Shekhar Nayak staying in Suda in Shirva. She was suffering from leprosy and her children who felt that the disease might spread to them and their children, made arrangements for her stay separately. She was put up at a small shack at Ajekaru.

Although her daughters were residing nearby, they did not risk taking care of her, it is said. The National Federation of Human Rights Council members along with police who saw her in very bad condition, immediately helped her and brought her to the government hospital. She was paluged by foul smell and unhygienic conditions, as she was unable to move out of her bed and had no clothing to change. Though she used to get old age pension of Rs 500 per month, it is said that the amount was taken away by her son. The Federation has lodged a complaint in Ajekaru police station against her son.

Sunanda was a daily wager until recently, and could not continueas she was facing critical health problems, due to old age. Her monthly pension was her only source of income. The NGO plans to admit her to a care home after she is stable and leaves hospital..
