Vehicles with protruding oversize materials booked

Mangalore, July 10, 2014:  In keeping with the resolve to highlight safety, it is reported that a total of 200 cases have been booked of the vehicles carrying dangerously protruding materials in the district as of July 8.

Dakshina Kannada district Regional Transport Officer Afzal Ahmed Khan informed that fines have been charged by the RTO from vehicle owners / drivers for violating the rules. The new rule, in accordance with the Union Road Transport Ministry, prohibits the projections of materials beyond the cargo body area of vehicles.

A notification has been issued by the government to the Transport Authority in this regard, in view of accidents due to protruding materials, especially construction materials like iron rods, pipes etc and also due to the danger posed to the pedestrians. As per the rule, the vehicles carrying such items should have red flags or reflectors, he said.  A fine of Rs 100 is being imposed for the first offence and Rs 300 for repeated offence, Regional Transport Officer said he cautioned on this aspect.
