Mangalore, 07, 2014: Speaking at one-day workshop on Pocso Act 2012 and Criminal Law Amendment Act 2013 organised by the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, at K S Hegde Medical Academy in Deralakatte on Aug 6,  IGP (Western range) Amrith Paul said,  Laws are essential for bringing in changes in society. The police in association with other departments should implement the laws effectively.  He went on to state,  there has been increase in sexual assault cases in the country in the last four years.

Equality among women will help in checking atrocities against women to some extent. Law can be an effective weapon to check atrocities against women. “When a woman or child is sexual assaulted   the police should treat them as family members, while taking up the investigation. We should ensure that victims come out of the trauma faced. There is a need to take up impartial probe.  Women’s Commission Member Shyamala Bhandary said there are complaints on delay in filing the FIRs. Owing to lack of knolwdge among the station officers, the case gets delayed.

Filing a charge sheet is essential in sexual assault cases. As soon as the police receive complaints, based on the prima facie, the police should file case against the accused.
