Mangalore, Aug 14, 2014: Chairing a meeting, DK Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim has directed all tahsildars to submit a report on arecanut and coconut crops following heavy rain in the district. He said that fruit rot disease has affected arecanut plantations in Sullia taluk.
A detailed report should be submitted. The district is experiencing 22 per cent below normal rainfall. The average rainfall in the district as on August 12 is 3,249.6 mm and the district has received 2,537.1 mm. The paddy cultivation has been completed on 25,650 hectare land in the district.
The Tahsildars said that 15 persons have lost their lives following rainfall in the district since January. Compensation of Rs 22.50 lakh has been distributed among the family members. About 25 pucca houses, 45 kuccha houses have been damaged in the rainfall. As many as 504 pucca houses have been partially damaged. Dakshina Kannada district administration has disbursed Rs 74.78 lakh to people affected by natural calamity including heavy rainfall and fire mishaps through respective tahshildars.
