Mangaluru, Dec 1, 2014: Eighty police vehicles were equipped with first-aid kit by the district police department here on Saturday. Superintendent of Police S.D. Sharanappa told presspersons that all police officials will be given first-aid training.
“This is important as the police are the first respondents to any accident or a violent event. At the least, the police can control the victims’ bleeding,” he said, adding that they also replenished the kit in many police vehicles.
Mr. Sharanappa suggested that every car in the district should be fitted with a first-aid kit and urged motorists to learn the basics of first-aid from nearby hospitals. “Citizens should also get over the fear of calling for an ambulance or taking the victim to the hospital. We had recently conducted a meeting to streamline the legal processes involved in appearing as a witness,” he said.
‘Yet to go through order’
Responding to a query about the Supreme Court quashing a suspension order against him and other police officials, Mr. Sharanappa said: “The Supreme Court has noticed that the principles of natural justice were not followed in this case. I was not given a chance by the High Court to present my case.”
On July 30, the Karnataka High Court had ordered that the SP, the Belthangady circle inspector and sub-inspector and the assistant SI attached to Belthangady police station be suspended till a chargesheet was filed in a land-grab case filed against a local “history-sheeter”. Mr. Sharanappa had then approached the Supreme Court which quashed the order on November 24.
However, the SP said the apex court’s written order was yet to arrive, based on which a chargesheet could be initiated against the activist.
