AIR Kalaburagi wins State-level quiz

Mangaluru, Jan 3, 2015: Mallikarjun and Santosh Kumar from Kalaburagi emerged as winners of the 14{+t}{+h}edition of State-level quiz competition conducted by the All India Radio (AIR). The AIR team from Mangaluru and Chitradurga shared the second prize, while the Madikeri team stood third.

The final round was closely fought with the Kalaburagi team emerging winners with 135 points garnered in seven rounds. The AIR Mangaluru team and Chitradurga team were tied at 115 points.

The Chitradurga team was represented by Annappa Swamy M. and Venkatesh S. The Madikeri team represented by Srideep P.K. and Madanna P. got 105 points. Twenty-six students from 13 AIR Radio stations in Karnataka took part.

This is a precursor to the National Youth Day on December 12.

The first round of the competition saw a close fight between the host AIR Mangaluru and AIR Dharwad that were tied at 125 points each at the end of seven rounds of questions.

The Mangaluru team, comprising of Awais Ahmed and Varun Shreyas from Expert PU College, bagged 30 points by answering all three questions correctly in the tie-breaker round. J.S. Tilak Raj and Preetam Mestri from J.S.S. College from Dharwad could only get 20 points as they could not answer which was the longest railway track in the country (Jammutavi to Kanyakumari).

This was followed by three other rounds involving three teams each. Winners from each of the four rounds took part in the finals that commenced 2 p.m.

Vasanth Kumar Perla, an executive of AIR Mangaluru, said the competition would be broadcast in the form of three 30-minute episodes on the AIR channels across the State between January 10 and 12. This 30-minute episode will be part of the Yuvavani programme of Akashawani that is aired at 8 p.m.
