Udupi, Mar 18, 2015 : A burns ward will be started at the District Government Hospital here from April. Currently, all patients with burn injuries, in Udupi, Karkala and Kundapur taluks, are being referred to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru.

The Lions Club and Bharat Electronics Ltd. have joined hands with the District Government Hospital to provide the ward, which will come up on the first floor right above the geriatric ward of the District Government Hospital.

It will be called the Lions-BEL Burns Ward.

According to Damayanti Krishna Mohan, District Surgeon, the ward will help poor patients.

The ward will be completely air-conditioned.

It will have four beds for male and four beds for female patients in two separate general units.

Two beds for male and two beds for female patients in two special or critical units will also be present at the ward.

The Lions-BEL have spent Rs. 80 lakh for the building and the infrastructure of the ward.

“We will be keeping another Rs. 25 lakh as corpus funds for maintenance of the ward. After the government provides the staff pattern for the ward, we intend to pay for the services of the specialists and nurses. The services of a plastic surgeon are essential for this ward,” said K. Suresh Prabhu, Lions District Governor.

Already the construction of the ward and its flooring is complete. The process of electrification of the ward and fixing of doors and windows is on.

“We expect to get beds and other equipment in the next 10 days. All other related work will be completed in the next three weeks.
