Fury of locals on death of a poor and good girl

Udupi, June 21, 2015  :  The district police did well to detect  the case of sexual assault and murder of a 17-year-old minor at Henberu village in 48 hours, a lot of anguish  that the life of an intelligent and disciplined girl had ended so.  This aspiring girl  used to walk 5 km daily from Henberu to her college.  The route  is remote with a hil  and woods.  She walked five kilometres to and fro in this terrain daily and got 94 per cent in SSLC. It is no mean achievement,  said a police officer.

After finding her body in Henberu on June 17, the police checked her belongings in the course of investigations. They found her mobile telephone and noted the  girl never spoke to anyone after 6.30 p.m. on her mobile. We checked her messages. All her messages were to her teachers, asking them one or other doubt regarding the subjects. She was a lady of great potential with out doubt.

It is felt this tragedy could have been avoided if there was bus facility to the village. The people have been demanding a bus to Henberu. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar, who visited Henberu on June 19, promised a bus service to the village as soon as possible.  The Chairman of the Navodaya Charitable Trust M.N. Rajendra Kumar, who visited the village on June 19, said that the Trust would run two vehicles – once in the morning and in the evening to carry students till the authorities provided bus service or the end of the monsoon.  At the RTA - Regional Transport Authority meeting held  on June 20, Udupi DC  Dr. R. Vishal said that all efforts would be made to provide bus services to remote areas in the district.

The justified fury of the people  demanded to see the face of the accused when he was taken for inspection of the spot of crime at Henberu. However, the police managed to pacify the crowd and urged them not to obstruct the investigations.   MLA  Gopal Poojary,  stated in Byndoor ,  that he had submitted a proposal to the State government to construct a girls hostel for the government pre-university college here.  He added that effort  to get a compensation  of Rs. 5 lakh  for the family of the deceased was in process.
