Good rain helps brisk agri works - KDP meet.

Udupi:  Briefing at the monthly KDP meet here at Zilla Panchayat July 13,  Agriculture Department Joint Director Anthony Maria Immanuel said the agricultural activities have got brisk with  momentum in the district following  good showers in the last 3 days.  Agriculture Joint Dir, said the district received 1,080 mm rain as against normal rainfall of 1,470 mm till June end. The heavy rain now in July has supported the recovery of the cultivation activities.  He said Alur in Kundapur Taluk received 456 mm rain on July 9, which is the highest rainfall witnessed in the past 100 years in the district.

The sowing activities have covered 26,350 hectares of farm land recording 59 per cent achievement against the target. Last year 19,450 hectares was covered during the same period, he added. The Joint Director said there is a stock of 1,732 quintal paddy seeds and 1,073 tonnes of fertilisers.  The agricultural machinery  are high in demand. Under Krishi Abhiyan, all gram panchayats are visited and farmers are contacted to provide the necessary information.

Education and Health Standing Committee President Gouri Devadiga said that the schools and colleges should be instructed to declare holidays following heavy rains.  She said footbridges should be immediately built at dangerous spots to cross the rivulets, she said referring to the death of a 9 year old school girl in Chakra River while crossing the footbridge.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Kanagavalli directed the Executive Officers of three taluks to submit a proposal for foot bridges under MGNREGS.   The area should be immediately identified to build the offices for newly formed gram panchayats in the district.   DDPI Diwaker Shetty said as many as 74,271 students have been admitted for 1st to 5th standards and measures have been taken to record at least 95 per cent of result in SSLC examination for the current academic year. 

District Health Officer Dr Rohini said 526 malaria cases have been reported in the district till June end. As many as 86 dengue cases are reported, however there is no death, she added.   Awareness programmes have been to create awareness on communicable diseases like malaria and dengue in the district.

As many as 5,698 pending applications would be dispatched by July end and new applications would be verified. For the month of July, 3,320 metric tons of rice, 725 metric tons of wheat, 144 metric tons of sugar, 1660 quintal salt, 166 kiloliters palmolein oil and 1404 kiloliters of kerosene is distributed.

Agriculture and Industry Standing Committee President Arun Shetty Padur directed MESCOM officials to inspect the line connection at UPCL thermal power project as the area is experiencing electric shock. The irregularities in Kaup Nemmadi Kendra should be set right.

Stray dogs :   The CEO directed to organise an awareness programmes at gram panchayat level. She directed the veterinary department to take up vaccination programmes for rabies following the stray dog menace.

The Food department official said applications are received for 5,151 BPL and 13,28 APL ration cards.
