Udupi, July 21, 2015 : Speaking at the inaugural of the district-level expo-cum-competition of scientific research innovations, organised for higher primary and high school students under INSPIRE (Innovations in Science Pursuits for Inspired Research) by Science and Technology Directorate, Government of India and Directorate of State Education Research and Training, Bengaluru. The Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake promised that Udupi district would be made an education hub focusing on various professional colleges and research centres.
The minister ruled out the idea of unnecessary industrialisation in the district to up the economy. He said the industries would prove detrimental to the ecologically sensitive areas of the district. He said the district, adjoining the Western Ghats, is one among the 18 ecologically sensitive zones identified across the world.
Stressing on the need for innovative techniques to enhance educational opportunities in the district, the minister stated that a science research centre would come up in Belapu at a cost of Rs 141 crore. The centre would be affiliated to Mangalore University, where the research activities concerning the environment and pollution would be taken up on priority. He said ITI and polytechnic colleges will come up in the district to help the rural students. Following which the government is also planning to set up government engineering and medical colleges in the district. A residential school will come up in Heerebettu at a cost of Rs 10 crore.
MP Shobha Karandlaje said there was a need to introduce the children to new areas that would help them to explore innovative ideas. Lamenting over the brain drain, the MP said that the children who are educated in India should stay back and be part of the science and technology revolution taking place in the country. She said that the Indian government has to import most of the sophisticated technologies and machinery especially for armed forces from other countries. She opined the situation owing to the brain drain has caused worry.
She said that there are no shortages of intellectuals. A situation exists that dependence on others for technology and machinery is increasing. She called upon the students to support the nation in its march towards becoming technologically self-reliant. She urged parents and teachers to identify the talent and support taking matters forward.
