Defective electric crematoriums to be refurbished soon

Mangaluru :  As per reports  MCC - Mangaluru City Corporation is preparing a detailed plan to develop Hindu crematoriums.   Very soon, the defunct electric crematorium at Bolar in the city will be put in order .  Although the electric burner of Bolar crematorium went out of order some years ago, no efforts were made to restore it.  While Mangaluru City Corporation will earmark funds, cooperation of local organizations will be sought to provide more facilities in Hindu crematoriums.

Crematoriums at Kadri, Shaktinagar, Kuloor, Bengre, Bolar and Nandigudda will be developed by providing more facilities.   Mangaluru City South MLA said that the tender process to set right the  electric crematorium at Bolar in the city is in place.  He said the contract to rectify electric crematorium at Bolar has been awarded to a Bengaluru-based company and work will commence shortly.

The city corporation will make a separate blueprint for the development of crematoriums at Nandigudda. The government has already sanctioned Rs 70 lakh for the development of crematoriums,  more funds will be sought from the government based on requirement.

Efforts will be made to protect and develop Hindu rudrabhumis using government funds. Meanwhile, local committees will be formed to monitor the development works. Local donors will also be approached for development of crematoriums under public partnership. The city corporation will also extend help for Christian and Muslim burial grounds if they come forward with requests.  

He said that the city corporation has a system in place to conduct dignified burial of unclaimed and unidentified dead bodies. He was talking with reference to issues related to burial of unclaimed and unidentified bodies remaining in the cold storage of Government Wenlock Hospital mortuary. On May 2, 2015, an NGO had volunteered to offer decent burial for eight unclaimed/ unidentified dead bodies from Wenlock Hospital.

MLA Lobo said that the burial of unclaimed/ unidentified dead bodies is taken up as per rules. The city corporation has its own mechanism to offer decent burial for unclaimed/ unidentified bodies. The MCC will take up the responsibility whenever an unclaimed/ unidentified body requires the service.
