Udupi set to mark ’Konkani Manyata Diwas’ for the first time

Udupi, Aug 13, 2015 :   Addressing media on Aug 12, Amrit Shenoy, president of the organising committee said that for the first time in Udupi, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy will celebrate the ‘Konkani Manyata Diwas’ (Konkani Recognition Day) on August 20.

Konkani  was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and given recognition on August 20, 1992. The Konkani Recognition Day is being celebrated at many places.  The celebrations would begin with a procession from Kalsank to Sharada Mantapa, the venue, where the public function would be held.

A cultural programme would be held at Sharada Mantapa at 4 p.m., where cultural teams, including Shekhar Siddi and party, Rukkayya Gowda and party, Damodar Kharvi and party, Geeta Wagle and party and Mother Teresa brass band would participate.

Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, Oscar Fernandes, MP, and Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Catholic Diocese, would participate as chief guests at the stage function at 5 p.m.

The stage function would be followed by cultural programme. Konkani speaking people from different parts of the State are expected to participate in the celebrations.
