Mangaluru :   Speaking at a workers convention organised by the JCTU - Joint Committee of Trade Unions ;  K. Mahantesh,  CITU - Secretary of State unit of Centre of Indian Trade Unions, said that the farm sector was disturbed after the government embraced neo-liberal policies two decades ago.

He said that a large number of farmers had been committing suicide in different parts of the country. But neither the Union nor the State governments had bothered about taking action to stop it. Even the measures, which were taken after there was public outcry, were piecemeal. The measures had done little to help the farmers. The government now was trying to amend land acquisition laws so that fertile lands could be given to the corporate sector.

The Centre was diluting labour laws to keep the corporate sector in good humour. Nearly 80 per cent of workers in the industrial sector were now being hired on contract basis. These workers had no social security cover, he said. Admar Sripati Acharya, CITU leader, said that the Union government should announce a package to deal with the unemployment problem in the country.
