Udupi, Sep 10, 2015 : Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, Oriental Archives Research Centre, Tulukoota, and other organisations, will jointly organise a Tulu cultural fest titled ‘Tulu Minadana – 2015’ at the Nutana Ravindra Mantapa on MGM College campus here on Sunday, September 13.
Addressing media here, Janaki Brahmavar, chairperson of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, said that the fest would comprise Tulu cultural programmes, a seminar of the traditional game of ‘chennamane’ played in Tulunadu, a ‘chennamane’ competition, a Tulu poets’ meet, a Tulu proverbs contest and distribution of saplings. The academy had held this fest in all five taluks of Dakshina Kannada and two of the three taluks (barring Kundapur) in Udupi district last year.
This year, the academy would be holding this fest in all taluks, including Kundapur. The intention of holding this fest in every taluk is to foster closer bonding between Tulu artistes and scholars of all taluks with the academy. In the long term this will give fillip to Tulu language, literature and culture.
Indrali Jayakar Shetty, president of Tulukoota, said that the Tulukoota had established Tulu Sanghas in 13 colleges of Udupi taluk. Members of these 13 sanghas will perform during the fest, and there will be a demonstration of ‘chennamane’ for the benefit of those who do not know how to play the game. The ‘chennamane’ competition would be held throughout Sunday.
A ‘Tulu Pachevana’ or garden will be inaugurated at the MGM College. Saplings will be planted in this garden in memory of eminent personalities such as the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, writers Kayyara Kinhanna Rai and K.S. Haridas Bhat, scholar Susheela P. Upadhyaya and Tulu actor K.N. Tailor, Shetty added. S.A. Krishnaiah, director of the Oriental Archives Research Centre, said ‘chennamane,’ a traditional wooden board game was an ancient one. A seminar to discuss the various aspects of the game and ways to popularise, as it was not in vogue, will be held during the fest.
Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, will inaugurate the fest. Shobha Karandlaje, MP; Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA; P. Yuvaraj, president of the Udupi City Municipal Council, among others, will be the chief guests at the inaugural function.
