Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Sep 11, 2015 :  To allow proper movement of traffic, Udupi district police have identified four serious bottle necks where many accidents take place in the city and 20 other

points in the district where accidents happen.  The four black areas are  identified in the

city are near Vishnumurthy Nagar, Nittur State Home, Shiribeedu Junction and Ashirwad   Junction.

Most of the accidents were taking place because of poor design of roads and poor visibility especially in the evening.  After 7 p.m., the car drivers visibility due  poor lighting was the cause. In two other places, there were bars nearby. This had led to some drunk persons crossing road without care leading to accidents. In some places, the road deviations on the National Highway 66 were unclear.

Udupi SP Annamalai K.  said that at a Road Safety Committee meeting held recently, the President of Udupi CMC - City Municipal Council P. Yuvaraj had assured that the CMC help the police in curbing accidents, while the Chief Executive Officer  of Zilla Panchayat M. Kangavalli would ask the gram panchayats to take steps to prevent accidents.

The private company undertaking the widening works of National Highway 66 had assured that it would put boards and reflectors on the highway to prevent accidents.  As part of this plan, the district police would also be installing 20 high resolution CCTV cameras along the NH 66 and vital locations in the district. This would help not only facilitate smooth traffic flow and prevent accidents, but also in getting real-time feedback .

Identifying the traffic problems the T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) are working on it. Action on the basis of the report given by the Institute will result.

The district police have implemented about 50 per cent of recommendations. The CMC has already installed high mast lamps at the City Bus Stand. We have asked them to install high mast lamps in other places especially Vishnumurthy Nagar as there is migrant workers colony nearby. The two bars will also be shifted.
