Udupi, Sep 22, 2015: Speaking at the inaugural of the World Alzheimer’s Day-2015 organised under the theme ’Remember Me’ at A V Baliga Memorial Hospital on Sept 21, MAA - Mangaluru Alzheimers Association, founder president Jardine B D’Souza said, care givers play a major role in the lives of people affected with dementia; care giving should come from within, so not entirely feasible by professionals.
Alzheimers, has no real cure at present and is a irreversible death of brain cells. Patients may have a life span up to 20 years with the disease, D’Souza said. The care givers face serious stress and at times will be subjected to mental pressures them selves. Asserting that Alzheimer is rapidly spreading and the depth of understanding the illness should be improved. The affected are sensitive and absorbing and need all care. He said women are twice more prone to dementia than men. Mental and physical exercises, proper diet and other factors will help keep the disease at bay. Doctors need to commit themselves to better practices today.
Dr A V Baliga Charities, Mumbai, trustee, Dr R V Baliga opined that the Alzheimers is probably the fall out of modern life. He said people live longer with advanced medical knowledge at play. Longevity of life span results in shrinking of brain cells. Stating that both understanding of disease and sharing of knowledge is the need of the hour, Dr. Baliga said suspicioun, anger, anxiety, repetition of acts shrink the brain. He added keeping the mind active and on the move will help prevent Alzheimer generally.
