Mangaluru, Nov 5, 2015: It is reported that faculty of Applied Zoology and the fans of late Manjeshwar Mukund Prabhu, well-known numismatist and shell collector, have together instituted a gold medal after Mr. Prabhu, by depositing Rs. 1 lakh with Mangalore University. The medal is awarded to a student , who scores the highest marks from the department, when passing out.
If six faculty members of the department put together Rs. 50,000, the remaining half was shared by the fans like U. Gopinath Mallya, Vasanth Kumar Mallya, U. Nagesh Mallya and Modern Industrial Corporation, Mangaluru.
The Academic Council of the university, in its meeting, approved awarding the medal after late Mukund Prabhu and instituting an endowment of Rs. 1 lakh to this effect. Late Prabhu, expired in 2014, he had donated 3,000 pieces of molluscan shells in his collection to the university in 2011.
