Mangaluru, Nov 5, 2015 : A public release states that members of the "United Christian Association"  have expressed oppsition to the State government’s decision to celebrate Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary at government expense. They have, therefore, decided to protest - demanding that the government withdraw the decision; at the deputy commissioner’s office in Mangaluru on November 6 at 10 am.

According to a press release, Tipu Sultan had harassed Christians of Malnad and coastal districts, including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Dakshina Kannada, which is documented as ’Arrest of Canara Christians’ in history between 1784-99. Tipu had arrested around 80,000 Christians, including women and kids, and transported them to Srirangapatna on foot. After Tipu’s death, only 20,000 victims returned to their places and others succumbed to the cruelty.

The government is trying to rub salt into the wounds of the community by celebrating the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan. If it continues with its decision, the Christian community will protest in days to come, it was said.
