Manipal: Speaking at an educational interactive programme for young patients (children and young patients below 25 years) organised by KMC - Kasturba Hospital on Nov 7, Poornima Baliga, Dean of KMC - Kasturba Medical College said that lack of physical exercise and appetite for junk food, had led to an increase in diabetes among children in the country.

Dr. Baliga said that lack in playground activities and more a sedentary lifestyle had made children and young patients prone to diabetes.   Shrikiran Hebbar, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, said that parents often found it hard to accept the fact that their child was having diabetes.   Parental education is very essential in creating awareness on issues such as taking care of their children, on physical activities and on medications.

Sudha Vidyasagar, Unit Head, Department of General Medicine, delivered the introductory remarks.  Video and slide presentations were made to patients and parents about diabetic management, healthy food and timely food, physical exercise, insulin injection methods and others.

There was an exhibition on healthy food by the Dietetics Department. There was also a demonstration of yoga exercises which helped in taking care of the disease.
