Drainage system of Udupi Car Street getting an overhaul

Udupi, Dec 6, 2015: In order to provide better amenities and improve underground drainage system in the heart of the city, the Udupi CMC - City Municipal Council has commenced laying new underground drainage pipelines and constructing 38 manholes in the area surrounding Car Street here.

The laying of new pipelines and the construction of manholes are taking place on the stretches from Kanakadasa Road to Car Street, Vidyodaya School Road to Car Street, Mitra Hospital Road to Ideal Junction, and Car Street to Ideal Junction. The council is replacing the stoneware underground drainage pipelines which had been laid 45 years ago.

The overhauling of the entire drainage system at the Car Street and its surrounding areas was essential as the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple was located there.   Besides, there is a concentration of hotels, guest houses and business establishments in the area. As per an estimate, nearly 3,000 to 4,000 persons visit the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple on an average daily.

According to P. Yuvaraj, CMC president, some hotels and guest houses in the area were discharging the sewage water directly into the Kalsank stormwater drain. Hence, the CMC had to replace old underground drainage lines and laying new lines to address the issue.

“We have already issued notices to the hotels, business establishments and houses in the area to immediately connect the drainage pipeline to the manholes,” he said.

Besides this, some of the stoneware pipelines had developed cracks and had to be replaced. The new pipelines which are being laid are PVC pipelines of the either 200 mm diametre in some places, while it 250 mm diametre in other places.

“The old pipelines were of just 160 mm diametres. The new pipelines will ensure smooth flow of sewage to the wetwell at Matadabettu and from there to the Sewage Treatment Plant,” said a CMC engineer.

The 38 manholes being constructed include 11 at Car Street, nine at Kanakadasa Road, 11 at Mitra Hospital-Ideal Junction Road and six at Car Street-Ideal Junction Road.

The ‘Pura Pravesha’ of Vishwesha Teertha Swami of Pejawar Mutt will take place here on January 4. The ‘Pura Pravesha’ procession has to pass through the Mitra Hospital-Ideal Junction-Tenkapete Road.

“We will complete all the work of laying underground drainage pipelines and construction of manholes by end of December. The overhauling of the drainage system will help in improving sanitation in the city,”  Yuvaraj said.
