Manipal, Dec 12, 2015 : Karnataka SHRC - State Human Rights Commission Member C J Hunagund said every individual should develop human culture to respect each other and fellow human beings.
Speaking after inaugurating a programme organised to mark the World Human Rights Day here, Justice Hunagund said the observance of Human Rights Day should not be limited for a day, instead effective initiatives should be introduced in the direction of protecting human rights all through the year.
Stating that India has a long-standing association with the campaign upholding the conservation of Human Rights, he added that the Human Rights’ legacy in India dates back to 12th century. Basavanna promoted the humanitarian values through his preaching. Another great Human Rights activist is Swami Vivekananda, who said all religion and religious scriptures preach and stress on protection of human rights, Hunagund said.
Human Rights’ values should be mandatory in the early stages of education. Children should be educated about the importance of protection of Human Rights, he observed. "Life, freedom, equality and self-pride are interconnected and they uphold the basic rights of the individuals. Human Rights will also be responsible for the personality development of an individual. The Indian Constitution which ensures the fundamental rights to every human being and it also introduces the Directive Principles of State Policy to ensure the commitments of the states in protect the Human Rights. Judiciary is also the stakeholder of the responsibility," he added.
He said bureaucracy is at the helm of affairs in violating the Human Rights. Nearly 70 percent of the cases reported in connection with the violation of Human Rights involves the government set-up, he added. "Service-oriented mindset is essential in the process of discharging power. If empathy is part of the work culture, it would guarantee the protection of Human Rights," he felt. He regretted that the police are also massively violating the Human Rights.

The measures for the protection of Human Rights measures should be introduced not only at individual level, but also at seismic and global levels. It is essential to conserve the natural resources for the well being of the earth. If pollution continues at the present rate, the days are not far when the humans have to pay a heavy price for it, he observed.
