35th Mangalore Varsity Inter-Collegiate Athletics Championships

Udupi, Dec 20, 2015: Presiding over the inaugural function of 35th Mangalore University Inter-Collegiate Athletics Championship for Men and Women and Differently Abled Children’s Sports Meet organised by the Dr. G. Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and PG Centre, Mangalore University and Lions Club, here.   Dr.K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, said on Dec 19, Saturday that Mangalore University was giving priority to sports activities.


Prof. Byrappa said that though there was an academic atmosphere in the university, a lot of importance was being given to sports. Hence the university has prepared a draft sports policy. The new sports policy would be placed before the University Syndicate and Academic Council for their approval, he said.

An amount of Rs. 1.83 crore had been provided for sports activites under social grant. A proposal had been submitted for an additional amount next year, he said.

Inaugurating the event, K. Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, said that it was only sports which could bring about coordination between body, soul and the mind.

Sports also helped in developing qualities of leadership. There was lot of importance and recognition for sports in the country. Mangalore University had been pro-active in organizing sports activities, he said. Mohanchandra Nambiar, Syndicate member, Kishore Kumar C.K., Director of Physical Education, Mangalore University, Arun Kumar, President of Lions Club, Parkala, Roshan Kumar Shetty, Assistant Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Jagadish Rao, college principal, and others were present.
