MU to hold Inter-varsity ball badminton event from Jan 2, Sat.

Mangaluru ;  T.D. Kemparaju, Registrar (administration) of the university announced that MU - Mangalore University is set to conduct a five-day all-India inter-university ball badminton championship for men on its campus at Mangalagangotri from Jan 2, Saturday. .

T.D. Kemparaju, Registrar (administration) of the university,  said that T.B. Jayachandra, Minister for Higher Education, will inaugurate the event. In all, 880 players, with 160 coaches, from 88 universities are to participate in the championship.

K. Abhayachandra Jain, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment and Sports and Fisheries, will participate in the inaugural function. Prizes will be distributed on January 6 at 4.30 p.m.

Dhruva K., former national ball badminton player and Ekalvya award winner, will participate in the match. He said that the university has produced several sports persons whose achievements have brought national and international recognition and fame to it [university].

Priyanka Kalagi of the university participated in the World University Athletics Meet in South Korea in 2015. Earlier, the university produced Olympians Vandana Rao, M.R. Poovamma and Sahana Kumari, Arjuna award winner in Kabaddi Mamatha Poojary, Ekalavya award winner international swimmer Aniketh D’Souza, international weightlifters Sathis Rai and Pushparaj Hegde and international Kabaddi player Udaya Chowta.

He said that the Association of Indian Universities had allotted two all India inter-university championships to Mangalore University for 2015-16.

The all India inter-university cross country championship for men and women was organised at Alva’s College, Moodbidri, in October 2015. In the same championship, Mangalore University won the championship in the men’s section and emerged runner-up in the women section for the first time.
