South India University youth festival starts Jan 18

Mangaluru, Jan 16, 2016 : Students from about 30 universities in South India will gather at Mangalore University for five days from January 18 for the 31st South Zone Inter-University Youth Festival. There will be 38 students from Mangalore University.

Vice-Chancellor K. Byrappa told media  that there would be 25 competitions on five stages which have been named after well known literary personalities of Kannada.  They are Kota Shivarama Karantha, Kayyara Kinnanha Rai, Panje Mangesh Rao, Giribale and B M Idinabba.

The Association of Indian Universities-recognised judges would determine the winners of competitions in music, dance, theater, fine arts and literary categories.

He said special attraction of the inaugural session would be the procession by students in their distinct cultural attires and symbols.  It will commence from Sheik Ali Road at 3 p.m. and wind up at the Mangala auditorium, main venue of the festival. The procession too will be judged.

The Vice-Chancellor said cine star Prakash Rai will inaugurate the festival in the presence of Minister for Higher Education T.B. Jayachandra at 4 pm.

P. L. Dharma, Director, Students’ Welfare, said the 30th youth festival was held at Tumkur University.

Mangalore University had won the championship in South Zone Inter University Festivals at least seven times, and bagged the championship in the All-India Inter University Youth Festival last year.
