Udupi, Jan 27, 2016: The date for filing of nomination papers for the zilla and taluk panchayat polls just six days away, both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are giving finishing touches to their lists of candidates. In the outgoing house, the BJP-controlled the Udupi Zilla Panchayat (ZP) had 16 members, while the Congress had nine members. The three taluk panchayats (TP) of Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala too were under the BJP.

T.V. Hegde, president of the district unit of the BJP, stated  that the list of candidates for ZP had been sent to the State unit.  The candidates for the three taluk panchayats were being selected.  Hopefully,  the candidates for both the ZP and three taluk panchayats will be announced in the next three days.

The BJP does not expect any problem from the Independent MLA from Kundapur H. Srinivas Shetty in the forthcoming elections.

The Congress too is finalising its candidates. “The ZP candidates will be cleared by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) by February 1,” said KPCC Secretary M.A. Gafoor.
