Circulation of counterfeit notes from Uppinangady

Mangaluru, March 26, 2016 : Incidents of counterfeit notes being circulated in and around Uppinangady have been detected. Several counterfeit notes in the denominations of 500 and 1,000 are being circulated in bars as well as in petrol bunks it is said.

Sources indicate that the incident came to light when a customer paid with counterfeit money after filling petrol. It was only after the money was presented in the bank, that they realized the money was fake. The bank affixed a seal on fake notes and later destroyed them.

It is learnt that the counterfeit currency is being circulated among people who demand for change and mostly operates in rural areas.  The people are scared to file a complaint as the police suspect them and they often face harassment at the hands of the officers. This has encouraged the criminal activities.
