Women’s and Child’s Rights Foundation set up to insure well being

Mangaluru, March 30, 2016 :  Addressing media, Sri Guru Women’s and Child’s Rights Foundation’s ’Founder President’  Srividya said it has been set up to safeguards the rights of women, children and transgenders, who struggle hard to find their way out of hurdles, in the city.

The foundation will inform the Department of Women and Child Development and also the Police Department about the atrocity cases against women, children, senior citizen and transgenders. There are 14 members in the foundation, she added.

She said the organisation is involved in several social activities, including providing rehabilitation for a visually challenged girl. It also intends to help poor patients who are availing treatment, Srividya added.

Sri Hari Asare, a self-help group which was set up by her in Moodbidri, intends to have a day care centre for elderly people, cottage industry, music training.

Jobs vital : Trustee Srinidhi said the foundation plans to create awareness among transgenders to make use of facilities provided by the government for them. Being a transgender, she said she is aware of their problems and lamented that there are many hurdles before transgenders to claim the government benefits and the major is the lack of a permanent address.

She urged the government to provide identity cards to transgenders who have migrated to the city from other districts as well.

They are looked down upon in the society and this attitude is preventing the community to come forward and speak out for their rights. Though many transgenders are willing to take up self-employment, there is a fear of unacceptability in the society, she said.

She requested the government to provide jobs for transgenders in government offices. If the authorities are willing, they can provide sweepers job to transgenders, she said.

SHGs to be set up :  Trustee and District Mahila Vedike President Nanda Pais said they have a plan to start self-help groups of transgenders.   Such groups are in Tannirbavi, Surathkal and other places. About 250-300 transgenders are found in the city, she added.

She said the district administration has provided 33 identity cards to transgenders so far and their Aadhaar enrollment is in progress.
