MU plans for MSc, medical physics

Mangaluru, April 15, 2016: MU, Mangalore University has advanced plans to start a new MSc course in medical physics. This course is very close to professional courses and those who complete the two-year course have to compulsorily undergo one-year internship in an Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) recognized hospital. The students will then be eligible to become medical physicists/radiation physicists in oncology units of medical colleges and cancer therapy hospitals.

To facilitate internship part of the course, Mangalore University entered into a memorandum of understanding with Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO) for collaboration in training the MSc medical physics students for their internship. T D Kemparaju, registrar (administration), Mangalore University and Dr Suresh Rao, executive director, MIO signed the memorandum of understanding to this effect in the presence of K Byrappa, vice-chancellor, recently.

Kemparaju told media that he has directed the board of studies of departments concerned to frame the syllabus, course content and structure, eligibility for the course and recommend the intake. If the process is completed in time, we intend to start the course during the upcoming academic year 2016-17 or else defer it to academic year 2017-18, he said adding students completing this professionally oriented course are in great demand all over the world.
