Mangaluru, April 22, 2016: Today is "Earth Day" and will be marked arounf the world in different ways. How are you going to observe it?It is reported that a two-day national-level seminar on environment-related issues has been organised at NITK, Suratkal, on April 22, and at Besant Evening College on April 23.
The seminar, which is a UGC-sponsored seminar on ’Inclusive Green Growth, Institutional Innovations, Environmental Policy and Implications for Employment Generation in India with Special Reference to Dakshina Kannada’ is being jointly organised by Besant Evening College, NITK, Suratkal, and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.
Addressing media, NITK Chemical Engineering department professor Dr G Srinikethan said the seminar will be inaugurated by Forest, Environment and Ecology Minister B Ramanath Rai at 9.30 am on April 22 at NITK. Women’s National Education Society Shyam Sundar Kamath will be the guest of honour and NITK Director Dr M B Saidutta will preside over the programme.
Two technical sessions: ’Local Governance and Sustainable Development of Dakshina Kannada’ and ’Development v/s Environmental Conflicts’ will be held at 10.30 am and 12 pm respectively. MLA J R Lobo, DK DC Adoor B Ibrahim, MCC Commissioner Gopalakrishna, zilla panchayat CEO P I Srividya, SEZ General Manager, MRPL Refineries Director M Venkatesh, Pollution Board Karnataka Environmental Officer Rajashekhar Puranik, Sahyadri Sanchaya Coordinator Dinesh Holla and others will take part.Technical session-3 will be on ’Public Participation in Environment Management Processes’ at 2.30 pm.
There will be a paper presentation on the theme and sub-themes at Besant Evening College on April 22 at 9 am. Later, a session on ’Urban Infrastructure Planning and Development in Mangaluru’ will be held. MUDA Commissioner Mohammed Nazir, Assistant Commissioner of Traffic Police, Uday M Nayak, MCC Mayor Harinath and others will take part.
Contests : Poster painting competition and debate competition for students will be held at Pilikula on April 23 from 3 pm.
The valedictory programme will be held at Dr Shivarama Karantha Pilikula Nisargadhama on April 23 at 4 pm. Pilikula Science Centre Director Dr K V Rao will be the chief guest, NITK Director Dr M B Saidutta and WNES Vice President Manel Annappa Nayak will be the guests of honour, Dr Shivarama Karantha Nisaradhama Executive Director S A Prabhakar Sharma will preside.
