Vented small dams in Ullal damaged due to no upkeep

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, May 09, 2016: A vented dam across the Talapady rivulet at Doddamane is in a dilapidated state. Had the authorities repaired the dam, the groundwater table in and around the region would have increased, by supporting the needs of the residents.  The residents used to store water by installing wooden planks during summer and would draw water for summer crops in the past.

Residents insist that the vented dam was used for storing water,  a few years ago, the groundwater table in the wells in and around the region was good and useful.  They also said that the vented dams constructed across the rivulets at Panjala Aramane Katte, Tacchani, Kodyanakatta and Madyar need to be repaired, to increase the groundwater table.  Small rivulet can be seen flowing beside the national highway, but it is polluted with plastic and other garbage. The authorities should initiate action against those who pollute the water body and conserve water.

A vented dam constructed at Makyaru is crying for attention. In spite of water being available, the farmers are not able to use it due to the intrusion of salt water at Devinagara. If the vented dam is repaired and wooden planks are placed on time, the invasion of salt can be checked and the water can be used by the residents. The repair of vented dam at Makyaru will benefit over 100 wells in the vicinity,” said Panchayat member Abdul Khader.

“We have appealed to the Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader to repair the vented dam. The minister, in turn, has promised to release funds next year,” he added.
