Crops, houses damaged in thunder storm

Mangaluru, May 14, 2016: Reports indicate, heavy rain and strong winds in DK and Udupi  have destroyed arecanut trees and banana plantations at Koila, Valakadama in Uppinangady and other places.

More than 2,000 arecanut trees and over 500 banana plants, coconut trees and cocoa plants have been damaged. Several rural houses have also been damaged.  Roof tiles and asbestos sheets of houses have been blown away. Gusty wind has also uprooted electric poles and disrupted the supply of power in Valakadama. The electric wires at Gundije have been damaged.

Further, several arecanut and coconut trees have been uprooted at Kunthoor and Perabe.  The disruption in power supply also affected the supply of water in rural areas.  Houses in Badagakajekaru, Kavalamoodooru, Balthila, Panemangaluru, Punacha, Mani, Arala, Panjikallu, Tenkakajekaru, Navooru, Moodupadukodi were damaged when lightning struck.

In Udupi Dist :  Reports from Udupi district speak of 21.3 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.   Karkala taluk received the highest 26.5 mm rainfall followed by Kundapur (19.5 mm) and Udupi (18 mm) taluks respectively. Plantation crops at Mala village in Karkala taluk have been destroyed.

A house of in Kavradi village and in Woderhobli in Kundapur were partially damaged when the trees fell on them.

In Karkala taluk, two houses --- one in Kananjaru village and the other in Neere village were partly damaged following the lightning strikes.
