’Green Mangaluru’, 3K saplings to be nurtured

Mangaluru, June 06, 2016: Speaking at the World Environment Day programme organised by the District Legal Services Authority and Forest Department near Bal Bhavan in Kadri on June 5, Sunday. The DCF, Deputy Conservator of Forests,  K T Hanumanthappa said around 3,000 saplings will be planted in the city, including roadsides and road dividers, to increase green cover.

He said one lakh saplings have been grown in the nursery belonging to the Forest Department at Padil, about 4,500 saplings have already been distributed to MRPL, MCF, Bharat Petroleum and other organisations. Teak, jackfruit and other saplings have been provided to farmers. They are given a subsidy of Rs 45 for each plant for three years. Rs 12 lakh was given last year for growing 2.80 lakh saplings, he added.

RFO Shridhar said one crore saplings will be planted by the department between July 2 and 8 across the state. Accordingly, two lakh saplings will be planted in Mangaluru zone.

Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo planted a sapling in front of Bal Bhavan, near Kadri park, to mark the occasion. Additional Judges C M Joshi, Pushpanjali Devi and Bhavani Herale, DCF K T Hanumanthappa, Range Forest Officer Sridhar and Bar Association President S P Chengappa participated in the programme.
