Girl and woman die in two cases of suspected dengue in Udupi district

Udupi, June 7, 2016: Two persons have died of suspected dengue in two villages of Karkala taluk in Udupi district.Rohini, District Health and Family Welfare Officer, told The Hindu on Monday that a 17-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman died of suspected dengue at Mala and Bajagoli villages respectively, on Friday last.

The deaths would be confirmed after the arrival of the dengue audit report.

There was high incidence of dengue in areas close to the Western Ghats.

100 suspected cases

There were about 100 suspected cases and about 30 confirmed cases of dengue in the district in May.

To tackle the problem, the larva survey and fever surveillance had been taken up in the areas from where such cases had been reported. Fogging had been taken up in Mala, Bajagoli, Hallihole and other villages.

“We have taken up awareness and education activities not only in these areas but also in areas which we suspect might be prone to dengue. We have distributed pamphlets on the steps to be taken to prevent the spread of dengue,” Dr. Rohini said.
