Special selection sports meet at Manipal varsity

Manipal, July 3, 2016: A two-day Special Olympics in volleyball and basketball, to select the State teams for the nationals has been began here at Marena Sports Complex of Manipal University on July 2, Saturday.

The event was inaugurated by Narayana Sabhahit, Registrar of Manipal University. Eight teams — four each in men’s and women’s volleyball and basketball teams — are taking part. Volleyball matches were played on July 2, Saturday and basketball will be held today July 3, Sunday.

Dr. Sabhahit said that the special teams had brought more laurels to India from Olympic competitions than the others. He said Manipal University had been supporting sports events in the past and would continue to do so.

Jai Vittal, vice-president, Special Olympics Bharat-Karnataka, was present. The torchbearer was Kavitha of Asare, which is joint organiser of the event along with Manipal University.
