CCB traps accomplices of under trial in extortion attempts

Mangaluru, July 18, 2016: Reports indicate that CCB, city crime branch agents nabbed three alleged associates of an under trial prisoner on charges of executing his demand for protection (hafta) money from a Bejai resident. The Mangaluru City Police acted on a complaint lodged by the resident with Barke police station and city police chief M Chandra Sekhar handed over the case to CCB Police Inspector Sunil Y Naik.

The under trial Gaurish, an accused in a murder case and presently in judicial custody, on July 11 had called the complainant and demanded ’hafta’ of Rs 25,000. Gaurish later also got his associates to call the complainant and reiterated the demand and also sent out a warning that he would be murdered if their demand was not met. The CCB team who followed up the leads arrested three of Guarish’s associates.

The police named them as  Preetham, 22, resident of near Ayappa Bhajana Mandir, Aakash Bhavan, Rithesh, 19, Malady Road, Aakash Bhavan, and Vishal Kumar, 22, resident of Kunjathbail, Kavoor. Of these accused, Preetham is wanted in a case of illegally entering a hotel in Mangaluru East police station limits and damaging it. CCB personnel have handed over the accused to jurisdictional PS for further investigations.
