MU claim of error-free results ’untrue’, no remedy in sight

Mangaluru, Sep 06, 2016: According to reports, a media release by  the Association of First Grade College Principals of Mangalore University, during a meeting at Sri Gokarnatheshwara College, has taken an exception to the statement issued by the MU, Mangalore University regarding the sixth semester examinations and the uploading of students’ data.

The Association president said that the University’s claim of announcing error-free results of the sixth semester exams are far from truth. “A lot of discrepancy in the online results and the results of a few students are not yet announced. Some students whose results are announced late are denied the opportunity to join for the postgraduate courses as the last date would be already over. It is sad that the anomalies in the fifth semester exams are also not yet settled. Some students are yet to get the fifth semester marks cards, some have scored more than the maximum marks. All the anomalies were brought to the attention of the University by the principals – unfortunately, no action has been initiated so far to rectify the mistakes.”

The release also said that principals have to bear the brunt of criticism of students and parents, who approach them, and not the University. “It’s a serious concern that the staff who approach the University with issues relating to exams are told that the principals are not raising such issues in the meetings. Only one principals’ meeting is convened in a year.  But nothing was done but excuses and promises given,” according to the release. 

Though the Mangalore University claimed that even after conducting one round of training, principals and staff in some colleges did not have know how to upload the data. The faulty system made it impossible to update the required data and calls to the designated persons remain unattended, said the Principals’ Association president.

The University has authorised the principals to attest the downloaded marks sheet as the University could not issue the marks cards on time. Unfortunately, the marks cards issued by the University show different marks, which is causing trouble to students who have already got admissions for higher studies. Question papers are not supplied to colleges on time. The members feel that counselling for postgraduate courses at the University and affiliated colleges must be conducted simultaneously.

The members appealed to the University to stop the blame game and take all stakeholders into confidence to settle the issues at the earliest and not to be a catalyst, ruining the future of students.

The special general body meeting of the Association was addressed by Y Bhaskara Shetty, secretary, Private College Managements’ Association. He stressed the need for the principals to maintain excellence in all their activities and exalted them work hard for quality in education.

Office-bearers elected

The meeting elected the new office-bearers of the Association. The elected are Samuel K Samuel, principal of Crossland College, Brahmavar, and Ravish Kumar, principal of Dhavala College, Moodbidri, were elected president and secretary respectively. The other office-bearers elected are Rajan V N, principal, St Marys College, Shirva (vice president) Aruna Kamath, principal of SDM College of Business Management (joint secretary) and Iqbal Ahmed U T, principal of Kanachur Institute of Management and Science (treasurer).
