Dasara plans ruined after heavy rain in Coastal region

Mangaluru, Oct 12, 2016: Reports say that it was a wet Dasara in this coastal district. Heavy rain lashed the coastal taluks of Uttara Kannada district throwing normal life out of gear.  In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Karwar recorded 109 mm of rain which is the second highest rainfall of this month.

Kumta, Ankola and Karwar taluks bore the brunt of the rain and flash floods. Around 15 families in Ankola taluk had to be moved to makeshift tents as water entered their houses. Water entered several houses in Keni and Badageri villages too in Ankola taluk. The Keni halla, a tributary of river Gangavali, is flowing in full force. Senior officials of the revenue department visited Keni and Badageri villages after a flood alert was sounded by officials.

Vehicular traffic was disrupted on National Highway 66 following a landslide from a roadside hill in Mudga village in Karwar taluk. Mounds of soil and huge boulders came rolling down the NH around 3.30am on Tuesday due to the incessant rain. Traffic between Karwar, Hubballi and Mangaluru was disrupted for over five hours. There was a long pile up on both sides of the national highway.


Those heading to Goa from places like Bengaluru, Mangaluru and other places to celebrate Vijayadashami and for the long weekend were stranded on the road for several hours. Police arrived on the scene only at 7am by which time there was chaos all over, said a stranded tourist Seven bulldozers were used to clear the road. There was respite from the rain on Tuesday morning either. In Karwar city, roads were submerged in places like Port Colony, KHB Colony with drains overflowing. Paddy harvested a few days ago was completely submerged in the rain water leaving farmers already affected by the poor rainfall worse off.  Belekeri in Ankola taluk in Uttara Kannada district recorded the maximum rainfall of 339mm in Karnataka in the last 24 hours up to 8.30am on Tuesday, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Bengaluru stated
