Increase beedi commission, firms ignore

Nov 09, 2016: Reports indicate Karavali Jilla Beedi Contractors’ Association and Kasargod Beedi Contractors have revived their demand to the owners of beedi firms to increase their commission to Rs 2 per 1,000 beedi. This long standing demand as not got a sympathetic hearing so far.

Kasargod contractor Shashidhar said that in a recent meeting with the four beedi contractors’ association functioning in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district, the owners had agreed to hike the commission to Rs 1.50 per 1,000 beedi. However, the contractors had opposed it and the meeting remained inconclusive.

Later, a few organisations had agreed for Rs 1.50 commission per 1000 beedi in a secret meeting. Accordingly, the owners have credited Rs 1.50 commission per 1000 beedi to the account of the beedi contractors. ’Karavali Jilla Beedi Contractors’ Association and Kasargod Beedi Contractors oppose the unilateral decision of the beedi firms to pay Rs 1.50 per 1,000 beedis. If the beedi owners fail to pay commission of Rs 2 per 1,000 beedis, we will stage serious protests," he added.
