3-point success formula to NITK grads

Mangaluru, Nov 14, 2016: Reports confirm that the Chairman and CEO, Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo India D Shivakumar at the week end advised outgoing graduates at NITK, National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, Surathkal, to imbibe three qualities to be succcesful in life. Be curious like a five-year-old child, bombard people with hundreds of questions-develop the ability to challenge authority in a responsible manner and most importantly, not to let down the aspirations of parents and teachers, he told the students.He was delivering the convocation address at 14th convocation ceremony of the NITK, Surathkal.

Young India :  Shivakumar, who is better known as ’Shiv’, made it loud and clear that the country is poised to be young for next three decades.  Most of the youngsters’ average age group in the country is 29 years and they are set to take the centre stage. The average age group of people in China at 36 years and Japan with 46 years, he observed.  Shiv, however, said lack of talents may emerge as a scourge to deal with demand arising from across the world. Amid this, the younger generation will be the first to work with robots and women improve their tally at work place.

Girls top :  Quoting the number of girl students among graduates passing out at NITK, Shivakumar said, "Today, 25% of the graduates are girls. In our days, it was in the range of 2 to 7%." With the big startup culture emerging, youth will be able to venture on their own, when compared to only two options ealier - either to work for the government or join a company, said Shivakumar.

Chairperson of Board of Governors, NITK, Vanitha Narayanan said the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) is focused on bridging the gap between institutes and industries and hence Shivakumar was chosen to grace the ceremony.   Vanitha, who described alumni as ambassadors of the institute, wanted them to develop intellectual curiosity for success.

In all 1,597 students were awarded various degrees. The graduates included 346 girl students, from BTech (802), MTech (544), MTech (Research-22), MCA (90), MBA (37), MSc (45) and PhD (37) programmes. Among them, a total of 66 students were conferred gold and silver medals, while two students were presented cash prizes.
