MANGALORE :  March 11: The Dakshina Kannada District  Child Welfare Committee has  announced the CWC Award for ‘Karavali Ale’ Kannada daily for being the ‘Best Newspaper Creating Awareness on Child Rights.’ The award will be presented at a function to be held at the SDM College in Mangalore on March 12 under the auspices of the CWC and the Civil Society of Mangalore. Neena Nayak, Chairperson of the State Child Rights Commission, will present the award.

Sudipto Mendol, the Correspondent of The Hindu who has authored several informative and enlightening write-ups on child rights, has also been selected for the individual reporter award.

Ever since the CWC has been in existence in Dakshina Kannada, Karavali Ale had been publishing several informative as well as educative reports on child rights. When several other dailies had hesitated to publish the report of the allegations of child trafficking against a religious person and the subsequent filing of a case by CWC, it was Karavali Ale which had published the report boldly. Though the newspaper had to face the wrath of fundamentalists due to this, it had never compromised with its policies and had continued to publish reports on child rights.
The Karavali Ale had also attracted the attention of the Child Rights Commission by publishing several reports of children subject to police atrocities. Various organizations which have been keeping track of the reports in Karavali Ale had recommended the name of the daily to the CWC for the award.

It is worth recalling that the prestigious Transparency International (Karnataka chapter) headed by former High Court Judge Justice MF Saldanha had conferred the  ‘Journalist of the Year’ Award to B V Seetaram, the chief of Karavali Ale and The Canara Times for the appreciative work of Karavali Ale in creating an awareness on human rights and for its crusade against corruption.
