Mangaluru, Nov 26, 2016: Deviprasad C Rao, a native of Mangaluru in his bid to project ’return to source’- Mangaluru, put on show, ’Lisbon Calling,’ a series of paintings portraying different images of Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, his second solo exhibition at Gallerie Orchid here as ’returning to the source’.
He has taken an artistic take on Lisbon, the city known for its pastel-coloured buildings, suspension bridge and coastal life which binds the artist in Rao, who also hails from a coast. ’A view out of the window’ the mirror image of dwellings in acrylic painting, gives a quick view of houses which seem like a pack of cards. The realistic image of the city gets bigger and bigger with other paintings like ’First vision of Lisbon’, ’Landmark of Lisbon’ and ’Senhore Do Monte’ explaining about vital installations in the city. The industrial area in Lisbon that has now shut shop, has been reflected on canvas in a series of paintings titled ’Industrial fragment series’.
Another series of paintings ’Man with a bicycle’ is bound to kindle and rekindle an art lover’s interest. A three-dimensional doodling with the installation of copper wire is the extension of Rao’s work on canvas. The caption says it all, "The lines and forms in this sculpture rendered are lines and forms present in his drawings and canvas works." A total of 23 paintings in different sizes, 13 drawings and a wire sculpture form the exhibition that will be open till December 2 from 10.30 am to 7 pm. Inaugurating the exhibition, writer Giselle Mehta described Rao’s works as a result of great affection towards Lisbon, evoking equal interest among lovers. Though abstract works have multiple interpretations, it can have a lasting impact, she said.
